Elon Musk’s X is testing a new feature that allows users to create groups for adult content, also known as “not safe for work” (NSFW) material.
This feature is part of the Communities feature on X, which allows users to post within smaller, interest-based subgroups, similar to subreddits
According to app researchers, X is working on this addition to its Communities feature, which could give creators a more direct way to reach their audience
Users who create a community within the app can specify in the settings that their group “contains adult-sensitive content,” and the X groups will then feature an “adult content” label
Users who fail to label their community could see some of the content being filtered out or removed.Communities on X can be private, and it appears that the social media network will ultimately require age verification for groups that feature adult content
X’s policies currently restrict “graphic media, adult nudity, and s*xual behavior for viewers who are under 18 or viewers who do not include a birth date on their profile”
This new feature is a part of the broader changes that Elon Musk has implemented since taking over Twitter and rebranding it as X. The platform has seen a decline in usage since the takeover, with daily active users in the U.S. down 18% year-over-year as of February 2024
Despite this, Musk has been open about his belief that X should carry almost all content that isn’t illegal
It’s not clear when this test will go live to a broader audience, and it’s possible the feature could still be scrapped
This new feature is another way for X to differentiate itself from other mainstream social networking services, as adult material has been a part of the platform since before Musk’s takeover
